Folklore linocut book illustrations for HarperCollins/National Trust

I was commissioned by HarperCollins Publishers to create linoprint illustrations for a book. Britain’s Folklore Year by Mark Norman is being published by HarperCollins on behalf of the National Trust, and will likely be out in autumn 2025.

The brief for the book was to create black and white linocut illustrations that looked quite old and still fairly realistic. The image at the top of the page shows the actual linoprint of a folk tradition called the Kern Baby.

I created 27 illustrations in pencil and then, once approved by HarperCollins, linocut and printed them on my printing press. Designer James Hunter at HC then layed out the internal text, placing the images at their appropriate points, and created this magnificent cover from some of my work:
